Got a JY 5.3 for a block and crank donor. While tearing it down, besides being extremely dirty, I noticed a huge color difference in the appearance under the valve covers. Was this thing half under water at one time?

Looks like one side had a a bunch of oil/sludge caked on. Not sure what to make of it though.

It's a junkyard engine so it could be a lot worse lol.

Possibly could have been the result of a clogged PCV system?

It definitely looks like the owner of that engine bought convenience store oil and still used top-tier drain intervals.

That looks consistent of the early motors before they changed the PVC system.

I am willing to bet that is a 99-02 engine.
