Default If you were going to buy a NEW shortblock...

Picked up a 98 T/A with a bad rod bearing for my 16yo son's first "1/8th mile bracket car". This will be a track only car (before I get any lectures on putting my son in a fast car). Leaning toward a LM7/5.7 from one of the sponsors....Anyone with any experience or advice?
Thanks,

So you're looking at staying with the 346ci displacement? Livernois and Thompson are two vendors I'd look at.

Yes, to stay low budget. I'm pretty sure I can buy a new short block cheaper than rebuilding. What about ATK? they have a forged LM7 for $2600 to my door! I have heard nothing but good about TMS but think they have raised their prices...

Haven't heard much about ATK lately, but what I remember seeing a while back was good. Are you going to have a power adder on this car?

Maybe...one day...
I've seen TMS non-forged for ~$1900 or so. But figured for a little more get the good internals for a little spray down the road.
Look at the guts in this thing! http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATK-LM7-LS-3...-/281853355147

The one you posted should be more than sufficient in a NA application.

Give me a call or shoot me a PM we would be happy to be apart of your build. We have a lot of people running our stuff and a couple guys going for the RCSB records with our boosted setups. We help our LS1TECH members out as well with a discount.

Here she is...new paint (beautiful), decals (meh), New A/C, fully loaded - everything works. Almost too nice to strip her down...I mean headlights work, no cracked door panels, seats redone and pumps working. Hell I will probably recoup all my money just in parts...

Damn nice car, aside from the decals. That's an easy fix though. Lucky kid.

Yeah, poor dude probably paid dearly for those decals. They were just put on a few weeks ago. I 'll probably peel em off and stick em on my lift.
As far as the hood, maybe someone wants to buy a black hood with a firechicken on it (hint-hint).
It will be some good father-son time tearing her apart (read weight reduction)

I'm pretty sure all V8 cars have the WS9 code. The Y82 means it's a TA. It'd have something different if it was a Formula. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Edit: Not trying to **** on your thread it's a sweet car. Wish my (step)dad shared my hobbies. Should make for some good memories.

I just looked at the first decoder that came up on google. Pretty sure your right about the WS9. Here are the codes if someone wants to look them up for me. Doesn't really matter to me, the decals are coming off. Too "Smokey and the Bandit" for me.
