Default click sound?? bad lifter??? way to check without pulling heads off??

I have this clicking noise...and cant seem to figure out what it is.....
its not rod knock...I know that one from a previous vehicle...
and I thought it was exhaust at first... but I have swapped gaskets and tightened all my clamps.....

sometimes its there...sometimes its not....

is there a way to test my lifters to see if one is going bad or has already gone bad
I figure I probably wil have to change it soon....

96000 miles on the engine
mods on webpage in signature.....

I also have a clicking sound goes away after I rev the motor or it gets to operating temperature it's a real light ticking tapping sound. I've heard it's the Expansion rate of the block compared to the heads lengthens the distance between the pushrod and lifter. I've also been told about the O-Ring gasket on the oilpump pickup tube sucking in some air and causing a lifter to collapse until oil is warmed up. I also been told that the lifters in the LS1 are fast bleed down and roller lifters make noise.
