Default pushrod lenght,, whats the deal

I made a solid lifter to check pvc.
Cam 222/224 566/568
heads milled .025
i put the lifter in,, my stock lenght pushrod and had NO clarence.
I put in a ajustable rod put it to 7.30 lenght and it was good clarence.
The base circle on my new cam is .040 smaller than the stock ls1 cam (unless the head shop measure wrong)?? so when i went to torque the rockers down the valve would open almost .140.
Do the hyd. lifters need to be at full height when running or do they just adjust so there is no play when running(if you know what i mean)
If i put in a hyd. lifter and torque down the rocker it seems to me that is plungges in the lift way to far,,any help please

if you're running a comp cam and .25 milled heads, you'll be fine. i ran .030 milled heads, a comp cam and stock pushrods for a long time w/ no problems. the valve opens that much because the pre-load on the lifter is not yet set. once you hear that little hisss.. sound, they have blead down. let it sit for a few mins and then roll the motor over. once you've checked the rockers again you should be good to go.
