What is the difference between stages of Ported Heads?

I know stage 3 are for race applications? But what about stage 1&2, what is really the difference?

I think it has to do with how much the heads flow but I want to someone to explain to me in depth what the diff stages mean or if its just a marketing ploy

Marketing; some folks stage I equals others stage II. You are better off having a discussion with a particular head porter and decide what you want to do. After you get the heads you want, call them what you want. I guess in general stage I is mild bowl work and stock valves, S2 is more porting typically and bigger valves.
