Default piston flycutting ? Have tool... no directions. Supposed to be 1 or 2 cutting tools?

I rented the ISKY flycutting tool from LG Motorsports and have the engine on a stand, pistons cleaned, and ready to start flycutting. It came with a dummy head with the valve seats removed, the ISKY tool, and no directions.

My combo: '98 shortblock (23K miles), 205cc AFR's (66cc cut .024"), MLS head gaskets (Will install Cometic .040" gaskets once I get the AFR's ported later in 2005), TSP 233/239 112LSA .603"/.600" lift cam, stock rocker arms.

So I've read that .050" is about the depth one should cut into the pistons for the valve reliefs.

This sounds like a dumb question but are there supposed to be 2 cutting wheels to use? I have only one that is about the size of the face of the intake valve and I know it will work for that purpose.... but don't I have to cut reliefs for the exhaust valve as well? Using this big "cutter" in the exhaust guide in the mocked up head I have seems like it won't work right.

Do I only cut the reliefs for the intake valves? The pictures I've seen posted have reliefs cut for the intake and exhaust.

I have the stock graphite style head gaskets still on the block. I planned to leave them intact and use them when cutting. I plan to set the cutting depth with a feeler guage as shown in the FFHP instructions.

Your help would be appreciated.

-Mark

I believe you are supposed to have two cutting wheels. Contact LG to see if they forgot to include it in your rental package. Good Luck

Can anyone confirm if there are supposed to be (2) cutting wheels. One that goes in the intake guide and then the other in the exhaust side.

I have my own Isky cutters and there is one for intake and exhaust seperately.

can anyone else verify there is a large cutting tool for the intake and then a smaller one to be used in the exhaust side?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes, there definitely are 2 different cutters. I think you can tell yourself if you tried to put the much larger intake cutter into the exhaust valve location there is no way it will fit. Most of the time the intake side is the one that doesn't have clearance, but if you wanted to cut for the exhaust valve also you will need to get another cutter wheel.

I saw know menchion in your post of checking p/v clearance what did you have and how much. And this is my personal opion on this there is no way in hell i would be cutting valve reliefs on any engine that is togeather. Now i know its been done thousands of times but there is no way you are going to get every chip out of the engine. Also how much of a raduis dose this cutter leave after you are done.If it leaves a shrp edge it will give the piston a place to crack and fail if it is not large enough you need a min. of 1/16.

Called LG Motorsports today and they said 1 cutting tool is the way they do it. Cut the intake side only to .080". I plan on measuring how much the piston is out of the hole and then seeing how much I should remove.

Instructions would've been nice with the kit when forking over $425 (core charge/shipping/rental fee) .

If you are doing this your self, with no prior knowledge, props to you. However, some thing of this nature is not easily done with instructions. We assume that you know what you are doing with the parts we sent to you

One cut, 80 thou on the intake, no need for exhaust clearance.

My strong suggestion would be to have a professional to this work for you. I would.

I now know how it is done at least using the supplied LG/ISKY tools. I've built a few motors and do all my own mods/work on my cars; however when 3 different people on here tell me there should be 2 different sized cutting wheels.... and I only have 1....

.....simple instructions with the kit would've been nice to clarify any doubts that I hadn't received the required parts the first time. I don't plan on modifying anything until I thoroughly understand how it is done. Now I know.

Off to the garage I go.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Any time you cut for valve clearance there is 2 different cutters i INT. 1 EX.

You measure the valve dia. add .100 to dia. and set tool to half that.

2.020 + .100 = 2.120

2.120/2=1.060 tool is set to this dia.

The reason you have a shop do it is you do not want to take any more out then you need to as you will increase piston notch cc,s
