Default cam question....

I am considering putting a ZO6 cam in my '98 LS1. I am looking for an inexpensive upgrade and I don't need to go crazy which is why I am considering this. The engine will be installed into an RX-7 and run mostly stock. I am removing the air pump system and egr. Exhaust will be 01-02 cast manifolds, possibly ported running to dual 2 1/2 exhaust with x pipe. No cats.

I have heard that this cam can give up to 30 hp when tuned. I plan on having the car tuned after the install.

If I was to put this cam in what else would I have to change? Could I run the original LS1 valvetrain? As I said before I am on a budget with this project.

Anyone have any advice?

u'll hafta use LS6 springs... i'm guessing its an '02+ LS6 cam? if u want a lumpy sounding cam, get the Hot Cam instead...

if you are leaving the heads stock you should put in a larger reverse split cam, anything around 220-224 duration wont lope cam too hard.

the key is not so much sleeper... i am looking for low cost, smooth driveability. it is going to be a rather odd sleeper as it is when an import has a v8 in it. i dont know what a reverse split cam is.

i was kind of hoping i could snag a cheap zo6 cam and install it using my other stock parts. i dont know a lot about engine internals though so i have been trying to read and search but there is not much out there about the zo6

i know i could buy a used one though for a little over 100. that sounds a lot more appealing to me than 3-400

am i thinking about this all wrong?

when a cam has more intake duration than exhaust duration it is a reverse split cam...traditional is the opposite and standard is when they are both the same...

The zo6 cam will be a nice increase for you, but you have to use the Z06 springs.. If you what i bit more civilized sleeper cams check out MTI Stealth and stealth 2 cam and VHP- 047 cam- 210/218 .531/.531 LSA 112.

I don't really know about you guys ut I did a little research on RX7 hybrids and they have a 3.90 rear.
A LS6 will work nice but not as much with stock heads (especialy 98). You can also get PP perimeter bolt heads Stage II for 995.00.(good deal)

With that cam and heads you can see ~400rwhp for sure.

This is from SDPC for a complete kit.

The LS6 cam has a much smaller base circle, that is why they use longer valves.
LS6 cam + LS1 heads/valves = 7.45 p-rods
LS1 cam + LS6 head/valves = 7.35 p-rods (that is what i run)
LS6 cam + LS6 head/valves = 7. 40 p-rods

Some poeple will tell you they run their LS6 cam with 7.40 p-rods, well that is why their valvetrain is out of geometry (but they do not want to admit it)

Another option is to shim the rocker stand .03 (that will get you even closer)
