Default How much torque on old head bolts?

I'm not reusing my old bolts on my new heads, I just want to install the new head to check piston/valve clearance and then if it clears (.080) I'll use the my new GM bolts. How much should I torque the old ones down to get an accurate reading? And what would you guys recommend, clay or checking valve drop. I would like to use clay so I don't have to remove any springs, since I don't have a compressor, yet. Thanks.

Just use German torque - gutentight...

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about torque, just make sure you have 'em tight enough to compress the gasket. 40lb/ft. should be plenty.

I agree but for an accurate reading as you mentionned, I would use a dial indicator. Clay is not very accurate, especialy in tight clearances. A .01 reading variance can be the factor between to tight a clearance and the right decision.
