Question Low Oil Pressure/Ticking, Stock Motor

I have a stock 99 with 57000 mi. (oil full) and it just started ticking loud from the drivers side and it is louder under the car and it ticks with acceleration. My oil pressure tends to drop low and sometimes to zero.

The wierd thing it that if i let the engine sit overnight and crank it in the morning there is no tick at idle on start up and the oil pressure is at zero for about 2 seconds and then jumps to normal. If I then leave it idle for a couple minutes the tick will come back and the oil pressure will bottom out and then flutter between like 10-25 then if you slowly accelerate it or just leave it idle the tick will go away.

I did not red line it or anything before the tick, I may of urgently passed someone from 5th to 3rd and acclerated just before red line. I do not have the slightest idea how bad it is or how much it will cost to fix. I plan on getting it towed to a shop.

I am hoping that it is nothing really major since the ticking comes and goes?

Thank's more any help!!

Might be your oil pump is starting to crap out on you. If you try changing your oil pump you will have to take off the oil pan. While your in there take a hammer and tap your rod caps if you here a hollow sound you might be loosing a bearing. IE your clicking sound. The clicking sound could be valve train not getting the oil up top. Hope this helps.

you do not have to take off your oil pan to change the pump...you just loosen all the bolt and it will drop down about an inch...giving you access to the pickup tube bolt...i'm not too sure you can take off the oil pan without lifting the motor up some...which is too much work when you can do it this way

The 99's had issues with there oil pumps failing if I'm not mistaken that wasn't fixed until the 2000 model. So could be that.

My stock 99 motor died around that time due to a bad oil pump. I hope thats not the case with yours. Good luck and I hope you get everything sorted out

If it was the bearing or the crank dont you think it would constantly tick?

yes...ticking could also be a bad lifter...or a needle bearing...you might want to check those...but i definatly recommend changing the oil pump...might as well do the timing chain while you're in there

So how much could I expect to spend at the shop to fix it?

My 1999 had a bad oil pump - a very common problem among many with the superior GM engineeering for the LS engines....

Do it yourself. take out the radiator, remove the crank pulley, power steering pump, etc. and loosen the oil pan bolts. follow the directions for a cam swap that discusses removing the front of the motor....

You need a gear puller that you can rent from a parts store and basic metric hand tools.....
the new pump is about 80 bucks....

Do this IMMEDIATELY or loose the engine...

i'm having a similiar problem. but i haven't notice that much of a chance from my oil pressure gauge.

It only occurs after about 15-20 minutes of driving at or about 2k rpms. If i stop and pull over it goes away. I am changing the oil pump this week. we believe its because of not getting enough oil on top. At least i'm hoping thats what it is..

Keep me updated.
