Default 98' vs Newer head gasket difference

I keep hearing that there are two style head gaskets. One for I believe 98 & 99 and then for newer ones.

The picture show what gasket I have and I need to know if this is the right one for my 98' LS1. Are the water jackets correct? It looks like the gasket is going to block the water passage between the block and heads or is that how it is suppose to be?

That is the correct gasket for 97-98 LS1's. It's graphite material compared the 99-up MLS gasket. Water jackets are fine as long as you install them on the correct side. They are marked for specific installation.
