3,000 RPM idle!?

3,000 RPM idle!? Today when I got in my car and started it it was about 1500 rpm nothing weird. when I gave it some gas it was at 3,000 idle! I gave it a rev thinking it was stuck or something and then it stayed at 5,000! I drove to work in 6th to keep the RPMs low. At the stop light I turned off the car and started it again. And it was just fine normal idle and not sticking any more. What the hell happened?
