Changing head gaskets with head studs?
Hey guys just wondering if you can answer a question for me. When I installed my AFR's I used the ARP head studs. Now I want to pull the heads and change head gaskets. My question is, do I have to remove the studs or can I leave them in? Leaving them in would save alot time when it comes to cleaning the bolt holes for coolant? Thanks guys!

Pull the heads and use the cometics over if they were not leaking. No need to remove studs. If you want to use a thicker cometic gasket, just put it on. FWIW, if I need to remove studs for some reason, I stick a piece of 1/4" syten tubing down each lower water pump port and siphon out coolant. This will get coolant level just below block and allow head removal without coolant spillage, worse yet , coolant in bolt holes.

I'll be pulling the cometics and running the factory MLS gaskets. are you saying there will be no clean up necessary because cometics where on there? Can you explain in a bit more detail about syphoning the coolant? Isn't there any drain plugs in the block to drain the coolant?

Nooooooo, don't run those thick *** MLS gaskets. One of the reasons you make power with such little pinging is your tight quench. Keep the cometics you have. And keep the studs in the block. All this is just my opinion of course.

But Patrick my CR is 11.8 right now-it really limits me to cam choices without flycutting. Installing the MLS gasket will bring me down to 11.35. I thought my CR was 11.5 checking the sticky up above but every formula I check shows 11.8. I don't think that using the thicker gasket will introduce a detonation problem-didn't you use the MLS when you first installed the AFR's? Now since I have longtubes I really think a mild cam will make these AFR's shine even more than they already do!
