H/C on a 130,000 mile engine
so is this just stupid or can it be done safely. should i just get the stock engine compression tested and if its ok run it...orrr should i get a new shortblock. (i reallllly dont want to get a new shortblock unless i need to to ensure the safety of my car.)

It can be done safely, just check your cam bearings while your cam is out, and get a good look at them to see what kind of shape they are in. If they are all ok, then take all possible precautions(oil pump, lifters, pushrods, valve guides, springs, retainers, locks, etc. etc, etc)
In my case, my cam bearings had some unusual wear patterns and were just simply rough, so i went ahead and refreshed the shortblock.

ok i was planning on replacing the heads (heads, springs, retainers, etc.) the oil pump, the rod bolts w/ arp ones, the cam (obviously), and the cam bearings. what else is needed (as you said etc. etc. and i'm not sure what exactly that entails) to make this as safe as possible. i want to be able to push it hard without worrying, so what effective mods can make my motor run strong and reliably?
