Default Polishing a cam

I have a cam with some rust on it. I know that pitting means it's a no go. So I want to polish it to see how extensive it is. What is the proper way to do it?
2000 grit, metal polish, both?

You don't want to induce scratches into the cam lobe, odd **** can happen with valvetrain dynamics then.

Try WD40 and some towels first, let it soak for a while. If worse comes to worse a very fine Scotchbrite pad and WD40.

Im not a cam tech, but i know that a cam is very sensitive and once theres damage you may never be able to get it revitalized. message terminated.

I had some rust on mine. I used 000 ( whatever the finest grade is tired and cant recal with certainty ) steel wool and WD 40. Came up smooth as butter

If WD-40 and a scotchbright pad can't get it off, I'd consider moving onto another cam, or sending it off to be re-ground. Any more aggressive of a material and you risk further damage to the lobe surface, and ultimately the posibility of what SStrokerAce was hinting.

Fine scotchbrite and wd-40 it is. WD-40 to the rescue!!!

If that doesn't work
I can try duct tape

I am quite curious about this. Do you have any links or articles that delve into this or is this personal theory?
