Default Engine Swap

Ok, here goes. I am a mechanical newb, I can hold onto a wrench, but usually limit myself to starter / alt/ oil changes..
I am losing the motor in my 01 SS, I HAVE to change jobs on the 16th, its near 2 hours or more each day in traffic, so a knocking engine is prolly a bad thing.... so, I cannot afford to have a pro R&R it, so an old timer I work with is offering to help, Neither of us have ever pulled a LSx anything from an Fbody, I am being told it has to come out from the bottom, is this accurate ?
Is it insane to yank it with a cherry picker from the top ?
The guy in question has alot of experience w /old school stuff, so is there anything we NEED to know, or should we not even attempt it?
All thoughts are welcome

I will tell you it does NOT have to come out the bottom. Take your time and label everything your first time.

Label everything, and take pics, so you get the routing correct, if the search is working there is a thread about swapping engines, with tips and some pics.
Good luck with your swap

You can pull it from the top. Took me and a friend about 3 days to complete. With stops for drinking, horseshoes & vollyball.
