Default Should I protect exhaust ports/oil in transport and garage?

Hey everyone

Wasn't sure where to post this..

For those who didn't see my 'spark plug being a pain thread' I cross-threaded my #1 cylinder plug hole and am going with h/c package.

Question is:

I removed my exhaust, headers and all, and now I need to have my car towed to East Side Performance. Since the headers are off, and the oil dipstick is out, should I do anything to protect the engine/exhaust ports? It will be probably 2-3 weeks in the garage before I'll have the car towed for the swap. Will I be fine just leaving the ports open and dipstick out?

Thanks

I would put the dipstick back in and tie wrap it to the block. I would also go to a marine store and buy some storage spray which is to prevent outboard motor cylinders from rusting over winter storage. Spray in each exhaust port. They I would wipe down the exhaust gasket surface where the manifold goes with some alcohol or lacquer thinner. Finally, I would take some blue painters tape and cover the exhaust manifold area completely to keep out junk. This time of year, with all the salt and sand on the road, I would be concerned also.

Good luck.

I don't think so, but any marina or marine store will have it. All the outboard manufacturers make this stuff. Make sure it is for storage, Mercury sells an anti-corrosive spray that works real well, but it leaves a waxy substance behind and I'm not sure how easy it will come off as it is meant not to. Boat US or West Marine will also have it.

Thanks for the responses.. uber helpful!!

The car will only be in storage max 3 weeks.. I'll definately tape the exhaust ports and put the dipstick back in, but will anything rust that quickly?

In my neck of the woods you always have to watch for this because of the salt air from the ocean and its only up the road a ways. With the right precautions, you should be fine.
