Default building a forged engine

So my new project will be building a forged engine. I have never been a person to have people do things for me. I am a do it myselfer.

my question is, how hard is it to take a block, and build it correctly with forged internals?

What I am asking for is, how many of you have done it, and what problems have you encounter.

I have done a few heads/cam swaps on my car so far, but nothing like this. I assume that as long as get the right parts, and torque to the correct settings, i should be good to go, correct?

any special tools will i need, besides the basic sockets, wrenches, torque wrench, assembly lube, loc-tite, and an engine stand?

thanks for the help

If you get the most recent issue of GM high tech they have a good article on building a 383 forged ls1, they have good tips and recommend a ton of books as well. It's worth the 5 bucks for the issue.

What is the date of that magazine? Its getting harder and harder for me to find GMHT magazine. I'm going to have to subscribe to it again.

I am inerested in this also. What kind of measurement tools are needed (micrometer, dial guage, cam degree wheel...)? There is a book called "How to Build an LS1" I think was the title, but I forgot the name of the author. How complete are the instructions? I have seen great write ups on installing heads and cam but nothing on the bottom end.

Will Handzels book

Between the two publications you should have all you need to know about building an LS1 from the gound up.

That GMHTP article is very thorough. It lists all gages, clearances, and every step by step. The only disappointing thing was the final price, it didn't seem much cheaper than buying a shortblock from a good sponsor. I think it was an Eagle rotating assembly, which is top notch, but the whole thing did not seem cost effective for the downtime if you were actually using your old block as a starting point. Anyone agree/disagree?
