I need to get a piece of magnet out and was wondering if I pull the intake and the plate below it if I can get to the top of the lifters. What is the metal plate?

the valley cover? well if you need to get to the top of the lifters, you will have to pull the head off. only older small blocks had access to the lifters by taking the intake off.

edit: found an image for you, that shows why you will need to pull the head. not sure who's car this is, but thanks to whoever took the pic.
