Default camshaft retainer plate gasket

I tore down the car last night to put the new cam and valve springs in and ran across a little problem. Evidently there is an O-ring seal on the back side of the retainer plate and I didn't buy a new one, didn't know about it, so exactly what is it's purpose and do I need that seal? The old one doesn't look bad so I was thinking about putting a really small bead of RTV across it just to be safe. Any thoughts on this?

I thought that gasket was reuseable?

Just re-use the gasket on the cam retainer plate, no need to replace it.

It is attached to the plate. Check for cuts or other abnormalities. If none re-use, if there are questionable things I would replace the plate. Don't use RTV. This plate blocks off the main oil gallery so this seal is too important to save a couple of bucks on. If it looks bad, replace the cam plate.

Damnit, guess I won't have the car done today then. Thanks, I'll order a new one just to be safe.
