Default Question about crank pulley (stock)...please read

What are the symptoms (visibly) of:
A) a loose crank pulley
B) a bad/unbalance pulley
or C) an internall problem that may cause the stock crank pulley to wobble
?????

The other day, after putting my belt back on (came off), i started the engine and noticed that the crank pulley visible wobbled almost an 1/8 of an inch or so. i though maybe that the engine was just cold or the belt wasnt on there perfect so i went on my merry way. well today i hear a weird tick/chirp kinda noise and go ahead and check it out. i looked from underneath this time and saw that the pulley is still wobbling (maybe a little more) and the bolt is with it (thats what it looks like to me). i dont have any other problems with the car, other than a mean tick near the coil packs/plugs, and the belt thing.

So what are some symptoms/experineces with this? How do I tighten the bolt to see if it is loose? What causes this, and how do i prevent it?

This is an Auto (with Vigilante coverter) 98 ls1 with about 56000 miles on it. babied for a while, but really beat on now .

TIA
Ryan

Tighten the bolt with a rachet. If you can do that... IT'S WAY TOO LOOSE. Forget the spec, but it's an insane amount of torque. Think 2 foot cheater bar.

Lot's of people have had pulley's come off. I'd check it now, while it's cheap.

There is a specific procedure to follow, where you use the old bolt and tighten down to "Oh ****", then remove it, put in a brand new bolt, tighten to "grunt" then rotate ~140° more.

Do not reuse old bolt.

?

Should not wobble at all Ryan.

Have you had warranty work done?

Torque is 250 ft lbs for the pulley.

I haven't really seen this happen on the GEN III engines yet. What may be happening is the outer ring of the balancer may be moving from the rubber elastimer between the inner and outer hub. I'm not even completely SURE that there is an outer shell of the factory balancer or not. I guess I don't pay enough attention , but if thats what is happening, a pulley replacement should be done. The bolt torque is also critical, if its loose just get a new bolt for it to try, They are like $7. I couldn't imagine internal engine damage causing that without any other symptoms.
Actually I just checked the service manual and it says there is a rubber elastimer between the inner hub and the part of the pulley that the belt rides on.

There was a TSB for the Tensioner pulley and the Idler pulley making chirping noises also. There has been revised parts to fix those of that is the cause of the "chirp"

Ryan, your crank pulley should not wobble at all. A wobbling crank pulley and lead to severe wear on main bearings. I'd definately fix that immediately. Good luck
