Default Prefered head gasket for a H/C swap?

I was leaning to the .030 or .040 cometic gaskets, but I have heard of people having trouble getting these to seal? Stock MLS is too thick, looking for something at .040 or smaller for a tight quench since my heads are only cleaned up .005

What are my other options?

ok, I did some more searching and found that I can:

1) mill the heads, use a stock MLS.
2) try cometics with some copper gasket spray
3) try .042 graphite mr.gasket gaskets. (4.000" bore)
4) Fel-pro also has MLS, mixed reviews

I might be leaning to option 3, this is just going to be a H/C car, no spray, no boost. I'll probably install the cam 1 more degree advanced to increase the DCR with running a slightly thicker gasket than I originally wanted to.

I would get the Mr. Gaskets. They are just over $20.00 a piece.

i used cometic .045 and have had no problems, the people that usually have problems dont clean the deck enough...use some wd-40 and a non-scratch cleaning pad and your block will look like it was freshly milled..

I have a buddy running mr. gaskets with no issues. Only drawback is that itll be a little harder to clean up the block and heads next time you pull 'em.

Look at the ls1 gasket selection on summit's website. They have the mr. gaskets.

The Mr. Gasket ultra seal head gaskets are not .042" thick. They are .052" thickness compressed. I've been through this before and I have a set that I didn't use. The Mr. Gasket catalogue now lists them at .052" compressed thickness.

I have called their tech line 3 times and got a different answer each time. On my last call the tech told me it was .042". After repeated questioning by me he assured me that he was getting his data from the "in house" book and this was the correct thickness.Someone in another post was going to measure one to make sure. Still waiting for the results.

this is the information I recieved via PM:

It's .051" compressed. It has been several years since it was .042". The gaskets are now victor reintz gaskets.

Have you seen this post?

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/619966-quick-question-can-you-use-notched-gaskets-02-cars.html

I just called the tech. line again(4th time) and told the tech. what you had posted. He said his "in house book" list the thickness as .042" and 3.97" bore.
