Default help me pick a cam please :)

hey I know some basic things about cams but over all i'm a novice when it comes to them. I drive a 98 trans am and it's an A4. as far as bolt-ons I have an slp lid and a flowtech cutout. is any cam I go with going to be too big for just a cutout? i've read some places that say you need a complete exhuast with lt's, ory, etc, or whatever the setup may be. also I have a fuddle 3400 stall (2.1 str). the car is a daily driver so i'm not looking for a monster cam nor can my setup probably handle one at this point.

Cliff's Note Version: basically what cam would you reccomend for a 98 ls1 daily driver with a 3400 stall, cut-out, and lid?

Thanks! this site is always helpful

Are you wanting the DD that occaisionally sees the track, or one that regularly sees it?
Any goals as far as E/T or horsepower that you would like to achieve along the way?

Honestly, I had a cut-out on my SS with nothing else when I got my 222/226 cam. It was definitely a different car after that. You can cam it at any point in time, but having all the proper aids will make it another worlds difference. It is also an M6, so I didn't even have to take converters into account. I have had 3 cams with just basic bolt-ons over the years and 2 cams with major suspension and full bolton's plus heads as well.

224/224 .581/.581 112
Went with the flow of the 224 craze and picked it up. All around great performer and exactly what I was looing for at the time. This is the one that went on before I did anything to the car minus the cut-out. Great throttle response and drove great un-tuned for almost 8 months.

222/226 .566/.569 114 Ready for something different, and was looking for a streetable traditional split cam. Well, I found it here. This was about the same as far as the 224 cam goes as well.

224/230 .588/.588 114
This one is now in my Z28 w/ a nitrous rated TCI 3800. It has an N/A stall of about 3000. Couldn't be happier with it and is even better for my 275+ nitrous shooting frenzy.

All were very tame and still produced enough power to make me happy with minimal mods.

After getting an intake and longtubes...I jumped up around 45rwhp on the 226 cam.

I currently have everything but an EWP (Electric Water Pump) on my SS and am running a near stroker profile cam 244/248 .598/.598 115. This thing is not very friendly in a traffic jam and has to be brought up to almost 2,400 RPMS before I can think of leaving from a dead stop without stalling ion stock 3.42's. I am working on getting the gears and rear end I need for it right now, but still on the fence. Just want to make sure that I am not sacrificing something more in the end.

your not rambling orangepeel, you always have good answers. i was maybe thinking 224/228 .585/.585 114+2? this is a good all around cam.

How bout the G5X3? I too have a stalled A4... bolt on's, unported LS6 heads... i am puting down over 400 to the wheels and over 400 rwtq...

I have gone though a few different cams... TR220... Comp 232/236 595 601... and the G5X3.. this cam is hands down the nicest of them all "for me"..

Good luck..
