Default install new main/rod bearings with used short block?

I'm looking at a used stock short block. I figured I might have it freshened up but thought about doing the work myself. As for bearings, if none of the tolerances are different than stock I could just buy stock replacement stuff right? No special thicknesses or anything for the rod/main bearings. As for piston rings, what is the stock ring gap typically? And would it be ideal to keep that or tighten it up a bit on a new rebuild?
