Default Is 2000 Stock oil pump good enough?

I am rebuilding a 2000 LS1 (50k miles) with H/C for a 94 RX7, looking for 400rwhp. My "Build a LS1" book describes porting the oil pump and modding the spring, but I can't find any online info on the spring mod.

Is there a reason for buying a new oil pump? And is this ebay item sufficient?

No, the stock oil pump is not good enough. Get a ported pump with a little more pressure (not too much though). Thunder Racing sells a nice one for a good price.

I have to disagree with that. I'm still on my stock oil pump and it's still has great pressure. 60 psi on cold start ups. Holds 40 psi when warm and at idle. I maybe one of the lucky ones but if it's still holding good pressure, why replace it?

Because an unported pump is a ticking time bomb. They are notorious for quitting with absolutely no notice. The ported assemblies are much more forgiving of not locking up or clogging when faced with loose sand from block casting or ingesting other nasty foreign substances before they get caught by your oil pump. I've seen lots of 2000s with this problem. Why take the chance?

My stock 98 pump worked great. 45 hot idle, 60ish cold start, 60ish cruise. When I did my cam swap I figured I'd swap it out for a ported one for, if nothing else, piece of mind.

The new ported pump puts up very similar psi numbers, but I'm glad I put a new one just incase. I don't want to join the spun bearing club if I can avoid it.

IMO.. if you have the engine apart for any reason.. and if you can aford a new pump.. do it.. cheap insurance.. and as far as pressure.. as long as you meet the general rule of thumb.. 10 psi for every 1k of rpm, and at lease around 40 psi at idle. you will be good (a bit better is good).

my 2 cents.
