Default Z06 cam swap

Tried a search but I couldn't exactly find if anything was necessary to swap an 02 ls6 cam into a 98 trans am besides the cam itself and the 02 ls6 springs (no shims needed with these, correct?). I saw mention of a new timing setup but couldn't distinguish whether or not that was actually necessary or it was one of those "do it while it's torn apart" mods.

Thanks

Well, you certainly don't need shims. The 2002 LS6/ZO6 cam has a cam centerline to lobe heal distance which is .027" smaller than your stock cam. To get the [exact] lifter preload, you would really need .027" [longer] pushrods.

Shims under the rockers act like installing [shorter] pushrods equal to the thickness of the shim.

Ok Ron, why does the 2002 LS6 use the same 7.40" length pushrod as the LS1 if it would really need a .027" longer pushrod like you just said?

Answer > The 2002 LS6 uses a lightwieght valve that is .027" longer than the LS1. This does the same thing as a longer pushrod.....
