LS1 for 69 Camaro
I am building a pro touring 69 Camaro, DSE mini tubs, roll bar, Gbar 4 link. I have a chance to buy a LS1 and 460E with 60 to 80k miles for around $2000 includes computer. I want at least 550 HP without NOS, this would require building a stroker with aftermarket heads and having the trans built up to handle the power. Would I be better off passing on the engine and trans and start buying it piece by piece? And what would I have to do to get that kinda reliable power out of a LS1. Your info will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I'd start with a 6.0L engine (iron or aluminum block) and build a 402 as stated above. 346 or even 382 ci is not much to try and reliably make that kind of power. 402 or larger would make your goal easier to attain.
Also, please specify 550 flywheel horsepower, or rearwheel horsepower. 550 at the flywheel is something like 475 at the rear wheels. That's attainable, but not cheap. Read Patrick G's 500RWHP recipe for more info, in the top sticky on this forum.
