Highest legal NA hp in California
I have been wanting to do a nice NA setup for my 02 Camaro. I want about 500 whp from an NA LS1 set up. I preferable dont want to do anything to the bottom end. What is the most hp that people have in Cali and still passes smog?

450rwhp is pushing it for a stock bottom end LS1, now 500rwhp is very rare and if a car does have that, it will sound and drive like a race car, wont be too much fun to daily drive day in day out you get me.... I'd say shoot for 440rwhp as a realistic goal and that is just a decent heads/cam package away with all the other accessories needed to work with it (valve springs, pushrods, bla bla bla) Good luck with it just honestly 500rwhp is alittle high on a stock 346 for most applications

Well i still cant decide if i want to do a decent h/c package or do FI. A procharger or STS kit on like 5 psi sounds really nice too. But i know that an NA LS1 will get way more respect. But yea i am going to be using it as a DD.

Let me get this right, you think nitrous is cheating? But then your not sure about FI? have you ever heard of "power adders" its a group, and guess what. Turbo's, blowers AND nitrous.... all fit in that catagory.

Lol...yea i know...i just think that with nitrous, if you run someone and realize that you are loosing, then you can just push a button or flip a switch and instantly have more power. Im not trying to hate on nitrous, i just feel its not for me.

p1sc for smog day and D1/ F1 for track smashing, you can find a P1 headunit for about 1000-1200 and sell it back for a hundred dollar less on tech, or find a friend with the P1 for smog once every two years
Or STS and pull the charge pipe on smog day
Either are possible of bigtime #s with a nice sized budget

If you wanted to, you could buy a used Procharger kit with a P1SC head unit and when you decide to upgrade to a D1SC or an F1A head unit, take off the id plate from the P1SC head unit and place it onto the new head unit come smog time...
You could also run a "Money Maker" nitrous setup along with a baby cam and a cutout that'll be closed when you're having the car smogged.

the reason you can't run a D1 or F1 is because they don't have a CARB exemption number that the P1 has. In CA almost all engine modifications have to have a stupid little placard with a CARB exemption # that means the state has approved this part to be added without effecting the cars emissions. you can get around this if you have a friendly technician that will overlook bs carb stickers and allow you to pass as long as your emissions are not above the passing limit.

Since when? Read this sticky:

LS1 stock bottom ends are good to 600 rwhp. 450 is a walk in the park.
I have to assume you're talking stock displacement and all motor. Add any power adder or 4xx stroker and 500 rwhp can be very street friendly.
Nah. You could do something like ETP 215 heads, 224/230 114 lsa cam, fast 90/90 and a 100 shot of N20. The safety is all in the tune and using a window switch. With this setup you could see a very streetable and extremly fun 500 rwhp LS1
Although you might need to upgrade the clutch, 4L60E and or the 10 bolt
