Default Lifter Noise

I had a "lifter noise" so I pulled the lifters out and they all "look" ok. Is there a way to test each lifter to find a problem? I am going to replace them since they are out, but would love to find the problem prior to putting the engine back together.
thanks

I think I would just replace them for insurance. That's a lot of trouble to take the heads off, just get some LS7 lifters for about $130 and be done with it. I don't think there is anyway to check them on the bench.
