Short block is just the block, crank, rods, pistons, and bearings. A long block is a short block with heads, cam and some of the covers, lifters, timing chain, oil pump, ect. Usualy the long block never includes the intake.

SHORT BLOCK- engine block containing crank, rods, pistons, cam, and timing set

LONG BLOCK- engine block containing crank, rods, pistons, cam, timing set, oil pan, lifters, pushrods, rockers, and heads

Hope that helps you out a little
