Overlap is mainly what will degrade idle quality and require increased idle speed and more timing. The more overlap you add, the more steps you will need to take to restore idle quality. You will begin to notice a beat to the cam at -8 degrees of overlap at .050". You will think it has a chop at 0 degrees of overlap. It will have a hard lope to it with 8 degrees of overlap.

216/224 114LSA cam = -8 degrees of overlap at .050"
226/230 114LSA cam = 0 degrees of overlap at .050"
232/240 114LSA cam = 8 degrees of overlap at .050"

Not necessarily. This is why I demonstrated 3 different cams, all with the same LSA, but all with different amounts of overlap. More overlap = rougher idle = more idle speed to smooth it out.

Just a quick question if I may regarding overlap @ .050" please.

If a car has say 0 overlap @ .050 will it still have some overlap at say ..020".

Why isn't overlap calculated from .006" or therabouts ?

cheers
