Default LS2 threw a rod, but why?

My best friend is in tech school in florida and needed someone to drive his car back to indiana for him since hes coming home in 2 weeks and couldnt drive 2 cars.. We made it 500 miles into kentucky and had it in 5th gear around 3k going uphill passing someone and all of a sudden the car just vibrated real quick and shut off. I looked in the rearview mirror and there was smoke everywhere. Short story, popped the hood and saw a rod hanging out. no other signs prior to this, towed the car home and pulled the plugs, there all white/greyish except for one, its BLACK, and its the one that the rods hanging out. could it have somehow hydrolocked? im just stumped as to why it threw a rod. Car has a daves wet kit, it was used one short burst about 3 months ago, and its been fine since than. Mods are pacesetter lts and vrx6 camshaft. any input would be appreciated.

If one plug was black like you say and that is the cylinder that had the rod issue I would lean towards a stuck injector. I have seen that happen before.
