408 cam suggestion for mid-range power
I am building an aluminum 408 LS2 stroker w/L92 heads and I think I want a cam that gives me good mid-range power. I'm not really stuck on a HP or torque number, I just want something that's fun to drive and feels fast. The stock cam on my LS1 died at 5,800. I want something that will pull hard to at least 6,000 RPMS. I also want something that won't be murder on valve springs (I'd like to run a good single beehive spring) and something that will get decent gas mileage.
I do plan on getting an aftermarket converter... nothing too radical.
The engine is for an old 3,900 lb Jaguar XJ6. It's heavy and has shallow gears. Right now it has an LS1 w/stock cam, 4L80E trans (shallow 1st gear), stock converter, and 2.88 rear gears. The car is a pig off the line and feels like it's always struggling to move the car.
On yea, and I don't need a rough idle or anything like that, although a little probably wouldn't hurt. I'd like something that's very driveable and tuneable.
I've been looking at these TSP cams:
233/239 .595/.603 - The numbers look good on this one but I see it's not made specifically for the L92 heads.
225/230 .617/.612 - This one is marketed as an LS3 cam so I'm thinking it's optimized for the LS3/L92 heads.
229/236 .624/.615 - Also for the LS3. This one has a little more lift and I'm worried about valve control, springs, etc.
Any thoughts or recommendations? I've been thinking about going the Pat G route but it seems like a lot of those cams are one-off and haven't actually been tested. I think there's a lot more actual testing and experience with the TSP off-the-shelf cams or off-the-shelf cams from other companies.

Have Martin @ www.tickperformance.com spec you a cam. He will do it for free and you can order it right from him.

I wouldn't say Patrick's cams are untested. He does do a lot of tuning and runs a lot of his own cams on his dyno. A cam for a 408ci engine and a 6.2L engine operating in the same RPM range, both with ls3 heads, would be two different cams. A lot of shelf cams are meant for and tested on the smaller engine, so a custom cam for a larger engine may not be a bad idea.
