Default Pleas Tell Me How To Breakin New Motor !!!!!

Getting a new SPDC 416 and new AFR 225 heads.

My last motor got only 500 miles with original breakin oil and the rings never seated.......loses 2/3 a quart in 400 easy freeway miles.

Pleas tell me specifically what to do. Such as use Rotella only for several thousand miles. Drive it easy or drive it hard right away. Change oil/filter after first 50 miles. ETC......

I have heard different things.

This will be 11:1 CR and will see open track racing every month.

Thanks for your advise......

Use the oil the engine builder says to. Clearance dictates what oil you should use. Warm engine up and let it cool a couple times then change the oil. After pouring in fresh oil get it up to temp and drive it like you would at the track. They dont put 500 miles on a engine before they test it on a dyno. They put it through a couple heat cycles and then flog they baby to redline!!

If you don't have access to an engine dyno then a chassis dyno would be ideal. Run the car at 1/4 throttle to 3000 RPM and then let it coast back down to a slow roll...then give it 1/2 throttle to 4000 RPM and let it come back down to a slow roll....now its time to flog that baby by mashing the pedal to the floor to your redline and then take your foot off the gas again. This procedure will load your rings in both compression under load and use the enigines compression to work the opposite side of the rings. After this, change oil immediately and hapy driving!

that sounds about right. depending on what rings you are using but alot of rings don't take very long at all to seat and wear in before it's time to go w o t.i just drove mine on the street varying rpms and around 3-400 miles later had it at the dyno since my a/f ratio was fairly close.

SDPC will send you oil specs. In that EOS is gone use blue STP for the zinc.

According to you boys there is basically no breakin time. Just a couple of revs and slow downs and off you go .........

Do you guys subscribe to the long breakin with dyno oil (with zinc) before switching to synthetic??

I used Rotella oil for the break in period. We did some heat cycles and drove it on the street to get the base tune. Then we strapped it on the dyno for a few wot runs.

Here is what I found out about breakin oils by calling SDPC and Valvoline:

According to SDPC who built my engine the first 5K miles are with non-synthetic containing ZDDP and then for the rest of the engines life synthetic but it also must contain ZDDP.

Rotella and Valvoline Racing oil are OK for the first 5K

There are two Valvolines. The NFS (not for street) and VR1. Both have the proper levels of ZDDP. I called Valvoline and asked what the difference was and why the NFS was $10/Qt. while the VR1 was less than $5/Qt. Answer NFS is good only for 500 miles and made in limited quantities. Also said as did SDPC that the VR1 was good for breakin.

Valvoline also has a synthetic racing oil with ZDDP when its time to go synthetic.

SDPC recommends either Rotella 15/40 or Valvoline 10/30. Valvoline also comes in 15/20

Is anybody using 10/30?? Seems like 20/50 would be safer?????

i use 5-30 in mine. my car has over 40 psi with it at idle with a STOCK ls6 pump but some motors have different clearances than others.

5000 miles? That seems prety long compared to what I have heard almost everyone else say.

You can call them to verify if you like, but I am sure thats their written policy.

I purchased my 402 through SDPC. I dont think they told me 5000 miles. I think it was something like 1000 miles. What is their reasoning for not using synthetic for 5000 miles? I thought the main thing was to allow the rings to properly seat?

I know this has been posted alot on here, but it is good info.

Default **** Break-in

An oil with zinc dithiophosphate (like Shell Rotella 15w40) and 3-5 heat cycles will do the trick.

It my be a bit excessive, but I also change the filter and switch out the magnetic drain plug every 100 miles to the first oil change (500 miles). The next change gets Rotella again until it's dumped in 1500 more miles for a synthetic (although Rotella would be fine for a permanent oil).

I'm currently using Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel oil in the LS7 with no lube related issues.

I would put in your break-in oil of choice, get the engine warmed up to full temp with a tune as close to final as possible, then drive it like you stole it. From what I have been gathering recently, modern ring packages break in really fast, and you don't have to take it easy for a couple thousand miles.

The link most ppl will give you to support this claim:

well i ran regular oil in my car, i didnt start it before i took it to my tuner, cause it wasnt tuned for the injectors or anything, and you do NOT want the car running rich before you break it in.

Dan Millen gave it hell on the dyno to break it in as far as i know, car doesnt burn any oil or anything, and 505hp later, im happy with it, especailly cause i have a lot left on the table with other mods.

Motors that are broke in the right way run hard once they loosen up!

Well the builder drove it for first 40 miles to make sure the Fuel Trims were in line by adjusting the Injector Flow Rate table. He did vary the RPM and took it up to redline once.

I drove it for the next four hundred miles HARD!!! Up and down it rpms even in 3rd gear (A4) on freeway ....... never saw the same rpm for more than a minute. Got the oil temps up to 240 at one point.

I used the Valvoline VR1 (10-30) as it was okayed by SCPD with the proper levels of ZDDP.

I was surprized to see that I was down about 1/3 - 1/2 qt after 450 miles. This is what my last motor was doing. But it was doing that with easy freeway miles. The miles I put on were more like track miles.

Anyways, I put in Valvoline VR1 20-50 and am driving now at a normal freeway cruizing with occasional blasts here and there. I sure hope it won't use oil again

Does it sound like I broke it in correctly ??????????????????

THANKS

DH
