Default Truck Oil Filters

I tried a search but only found people saying they use a truck (Long) filter on their ls1 one but not why. Obviously they hold and filter more oil; im guessing at a faster rate but is this necessary on a stock ls1 and what are the downsides? Thank you for your time.

The filter hangs down slightly lower than the bottom of the oil pan. I guess that you could hit something on the road and knock it up and have it strike the oil filter and maybe knock it off or cause it to leak. I have been running the truck filter for the last 140,000 miles without a problem with it.

Thanks guys, however I am confused about the specs. The recommended filter is hp-2007 form my research and I think the hp-2006 filter is the correct "large truck filter" that’s fits the ls1 oil pan. The K&N specs say that the 2006 model has no “PSI relief valve” and the 2007 does. Is this important? Secondly, the inside thread diameter specs are different so would it still fit? Thank you.

I did some math to find out the volume of each filter.
Filter 2006 has a volume of 32.36
Filter 2007 has a volume of 46.46
Therefore the recommend filter HP-2007 is 35% larger then Hp-2006. Please correct me if I am wrong.
