SEMA Review: Camaro Dale Jr. Edition

When the 2010 Camaro hits the streets, there will be two different engine codes for the automatic and manual transmission SS models, and the Dale Jr. Edition Camaro was designed to showcase the new L99 engine, even though this show model was equipped with a manual transmission. The 2010 Camaro SS automatic model is powered by General Motors “new” L99 6.2L engine, which is basically an LS3 modified with GMs Active Fuel Management system. This system allows the 6.2L engine to get improved fuel economy, while still feeding 400 horsepower into the Hydra-Matic 6L80 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Drivetrain
The Camaro Dale Jr. Edition starts with the L99, but it has been modified via a set of GMA headers, GMA catback exhaust, and a prototype E85 fuel system. Also, the automatic transmission has been replaced by a 6-speed manual transmission, topped by a GMA short throw shifter.

The Exterior
The exterior of the car has been modified, beginning with a set of Camaro RS halo headlights, and a custom paint job, matching the JR Motorsports logo on the front fenders. The Dale Jr. Edition wears a set of concept GMA aluminum wheels, with the stance of the car adjusted by Eibach custom lowering springs in the front and rear. The Jr. Edition also includes the Chevy Accessories body package, and a unique molded-look rear spoiler.

The Interior
On the inside, the Dale Jr. Edition Camaro has been fully revamped. The interior trim matches the exterior, with JR Motorsports emblems on the floormats and seats, which are finished in black leather and suede, with orange stitching. The key addition to the interior is the state of the art sound system, designed by Boston Acoustics, featuring improved speakers throughout the car, with several amplifiers added to power this ear-shattering sound system.

Chevrolet has given us a Dale Jr. Edition Monte Carlo SS, but this trim package, especially if equipped with the sound system upgrade could be a popular one, even though its unlikely to see something with this level of drivetrain modifications offered from the factory, especially with the manual transmission mated to the auto-trans option engine. If they offered a similar package, based as a “sights and sounds package”, would it be a successful one?
