How can I tell if this is a hotcam or not?
I have had this cam for maybe 4 years just sitting around and I am finally going to put it in but I want to make sure its the hotcam. I bought it used. There are 2 numbers on the butt of the cam (opposite side of dowel pin) but the dealership couldnt tell me squat. So whats the easiest way to tell other than taking it to a machine shop and getting charged for it? Can I measure it somehow?
And dont worry about it being outdated and a small cam because this is my wifes car. It still has to be driveable for her. Thanks.

Its got a stripe in that same spot but most of it is rubbed off. It looks more of a white color to me. The cam shaft has been sitting so long its kinda rusty now.

Why not measure the base circle of the cam using a dial caliper, then measure the lobe at max lift, add it together and determine that way? Lobe lift should be right around .492".
I'm no rocket scientist, but someone tell me why this wouldn't work?
EDIT: You want to install a cam that's a bit rusty? Eek. I'd be concerned with pitting on the lobes, even if you still clean it up.

Alright I took it to the Napa machine shop and some old guy measured 1 lobe. His measurements came out to be .323 for the base lift which would come out to .516 lift with 1.6 RR. The specs say its .328 and .525. I guess he was close enough right? His hands were a little jittery lol. So am I safe to say he was off a tad and this is a Hotcam?

Well 100% sure you can t be,but 586 stamped on the backside ,and his measurement is right,i should take it for a hot cam.
I saw your question about installing a used cam.
Have no info about your car?
But you probebly aware of that you need better valve springs.
Optispark , waterpump, timing chain condition?
Think twice befor you start this cam installation,it is better do it right
the first time.

Thanks. It is stamped 586 like all the others. I am installing the hotcam springs tomorrow and new timing set. opti and water pump were fine before so I will reinstall. This car will be lucky to see 1,000 miles in a year. Its a weekend cruiser. Everything I have taken out of the engine has virtually no wear including lifters. I was amazed.
