Default What exactly is backlash and could this the Loud 2-1 clunk

I get when deaccelerating?

Could backlash be "free space" between the pinion and ring that causes this loud clunk I hear in the rear ending when slowing down from 15 mph to a stop?

Also the 2-3 shift can cause the same noise. It almost sounds like the pinion is slamming into the ring like a hammer.

Is this a backlash problem?
Posi problem?

I bet on a worn bushings or shocks or the like,
backlash doesn't really show up as a problem in a moving vehicle.
It is the amount of play between ring & pinion, & is normally in the .012 range.
So if the car is moving the gears are in mesh on drive side on accel, backlash problems dont show now.
They show up at stop , going P to R etc.

The clunk is in the differential, could it be the posi?

Yeah I would say it is the posi because I had a similiar problem with mine. When I slowed down I would here a really bad clunk in the rear. I would suggest taking the differential cover off and see how much metal you have build up on the magnet.
Don't you think guys.
good luck.
