Default My theft deterrent lock issue

Today my battery ran real low and the theft deterrent light came on. I cannot start the car and I cannot take the theft lock off because I don't have the 4 digit code. With my old '95 I called the dealer gave them my vin and they gave me the code and all was well. I called and they said I need to take my car in so they can pull the radio to get the serial number. Then they will contact GM with my serial number to get the code and it will cost me $93! I'm quite pissed because I am a very poor college student and in no way can I afford to pay that much money for something that pathetically stupid. I just want the damn code! Anyone have to do the same or is there another alternative?

Good news my dad just got home so I jumped the car and the theft deterrent light went off and all is well. Kinda strange but not complaining.
