Default sunshell and sun gear question

So i was talking to my local tranny shop about building my transmission (4l60e), and he mentioned something about welding the sunshell and sun gear together then machining the weld smooth??? I've never heard of this before and i'm just wondering if there are any benefits from it or if it's even possible (maybe i heard him wrong).

Just buy a beast shell and be done with it. It will cost less and will be strong enough.

There is a local shop that does the same thing. It is alot of extra work to weld it and smooth it out, its worth the extra 50 bucks to me to just buy the beast and be done with it. The shop is just trying to save some money, because it isn't stronger.
