New engine break in procedure?

New engine break in procedure?
Getting ready to fire the new engine up. What is everyone's preferred method of breaking in a new engine.
Let it get to operating temp and then run it hard i.e. WOT pulls to 5800 in 2nd, 3rd, 4th to get the rings to seat(how many WOT pulls do I need to do, if breaking in the engine this way?)
How many miles should I put on it before I drop the break in oil out 25?-50?
-OR-
Do the gentle break in procedure?
Warm it up to operating temp and drive the car normally for 25-50 miles?
I am interested in what everyone's view on this.

Re: New engine break in procedure?
You are going to get many varying trains of though on this, but here is how I have broken in quite a few LS1s I have built:
1) Fire engine and let it get to operating temperature. Let it run at operating temps for about 10 minutes.
2) Drain break in oil and put new oil in (non-synthetic).
3) Drive car easily for ~25 miles, checking oil pressure, etc.
4) Make a WOT pass up to redline and then let off the gas. Let the motor brake the car on decel. Do this 4-5 times.
5) Change oil at 500 miles at minimum.
This is the way I prefer to break them in. However, the forged motor in my sig was put together, fired up, oil changed, drove off lift and on the dyno and tuned. lol It's break in time was the distance from the lift to the dyno.. about 50 feet. lol

Re: New engine break in procedure?
The dyno is about a 1/4mile from my driveway I am sure I can do the all that before I get there
Seriously though I like your method (steps 1-5). I think I will be doing it that way. My redline is 7000rpm, should I spin it that high?
Thanks Jason,
J
PS you are right about the varying thoughts on this. I am getting all kinds of advice on how it should be broken in
