Default Fuel Pump Problems

OK, I have a wierd problem. First I realized my car wasn't getting fuel because my car was just turning over but wouldn't start. I checked my fuel pump relay(clicked so it's ok) and my fuel pump by hookin it up directly to the battery and It ran fine. When I put it back and plugged it up, (with the pump out of the tank and in my hand) and turned the key, the pump clicked, but did not stay on for even a second. I've had a battery that has died multiple times but charged it all the way back up so I may not have enough voltage but I seriously doubt it. Can any one answer this for me, because I'm stumped and I've been looking around and haven't found anyone with the same problem. Please help!

do you have a fuse in line with the power going directly to the battery? my guess is you do. and if you do it might be blown and if it is replace it. if it blows again as soon as you put it in. the power wire has grounded it self to something probably the exhaust
