Changing gear ratio, what needs to be done?
going from whatever is stock on an `01 z28 A4, to a 3.42 rear from an M6 SS.
Car has a lid and catback, but otherwise stock.
Would a hypertech work? Or is something like an SCT required?

Go to a GM dealer and ask them to adjust (correct it by changing the PPK value) with Tech 2.

I switched to 4.30 gears in my 97 cobra and all I needed was a $100 speedcal that plugged inline with the VSS to recalibrate everything and it ran perfect.

You asked for the cheapest solution, did you not?

If you're on good terms with your local GM Service Manager and ask nicely, I don't see why not.
(Or use your diplomatic charm and tact if not).
All you need to do is ask for it to be changed to another stock setting; the same as the M6 PPK value.
This assumes you are on the same overall diameter tyres as a stock car. As this will also affect the speedo and shift points.
