Broken Timing Chain?
Saturday night i thought i blew my 382 LS1 Stroker. I was at WOT in 3rd gear at about 4500 rpms when wham i herd a noise and the motor just shut off.
I coasted to a stop and tried to start the motor with no luck. It was like the motor was seized. Today i got it to the shop and the valvetrain is frozen. They are guessing that the stock timing chain broke.
Was the stock chain not up to the task of a X1 cammed stroker?
What chain should i go with?

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
I second that; this chain is really stout and has zero slack....get the torrington bearing one too...I had to drill the peg hole in the big sprocket (1/4 inch drill) for the cam peg ...but no biggie...
really an excellent value at around $80 bucks...
There was a survey here a few weeks back about broken timing chains....One Rollmaster double did break - I was surprised....

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
I dont know why i was running a stock chain. For 80-150 bucks it seems like cheap insurance. I thought i had researched everything before having this motor built for me. All the way down to the oil pump. And this little tiny cheap part might cost me alot of $$$.

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
Man I would hunt down the cause. Plenty of people are turning serious RPM's with the stock chain without problems. The aftermarket chains seem to break almost as often as the stockers. Maybe more. Also some of the chains with no slack I have heard wear on the cam bearings pretty hard.

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
Is anyone using the heavy duty single roller GM chain? I think it's the one used in the C5R. I like the idea of a stronger chain, but maybe not so tight that it will cause excessive wear on the cam bearings.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune Mike. Hopefully it won't get too expensive.

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
Ok, the statement about the cam bearings is misleading. If you have any kind of aggressive cam and you have new springs, they put more stress on the cam bearings than the timing chain does.

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
Oh man, I broke mine with ARE heads and a tr224, well SEVERAL thousands later I am up and running.
Heres what happened to me. I was up in the rpms in third so its probably not as bad for you.
kissed all 8 pistons with huge eyelashes (junk)
bent every single valve like an L (junk)
collapsed several lifters (junk)
shaved two lobes off of tr224 ( junk)
destroyed cam tunnel (block junk)
bent a few hardened push rods
needed to have heads repaired as well and some more crap Im sure
So now I sport a forged ls6 with 3.905 bore and the first thing I bought was a double roller.
Good luck

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
If you dont want to go through what im going through do it!
I mean a 10000 dollar motor .vs a 120 dollar part its a no brainer.
Get a better chain.

Re: Broken Timing Chain?
Well according to that other thread(the poll) the double rollers seem to break as often as the stockers? But I suppose I will get one anyhow... Where is the cheapest place to get one?
