Default Backfiring / starter kick back, new swap...

Got involved in a swap into an old rod... using a 1999 Ls1 out of a Camaro SS, and sent the PCM for mods to eliminate extra baggage to Current Performance, got their wire harness, etc. Got the car ready to fire and it has a massive back fire / starter kick back like crazy! Broke the nose off the starter, and we are stumped. Anybody have any ideas what we can check? It seems to us like there is something amiss with the ignition timing, but we don't know how to diagnose it.. where is the damn distributor! HA, HA.

Engine and PCM was all out of the same wreck... was not water flooded, was running before the insurance write off,

thanks all,
rb
