Default 71' 12 bolt fit in a 99' camaro?????

Will a 12 bolt rear axle out of a 1971 Camaro fit a 1999 Camaro SS?? Someone told me it might. I doubt it will.

not at all. '71 has leaf springs and does not have the mounting surfaces for your torque arm.

I bolted a '73 8.5" 10-bolt under a 94Z28 once... Used the leaf springs too. Bolted the front eyelets in to the lower control arm holes, and just jammed the rear eyelets under the rear bumper.

Of course, this 94Z was a parts car, and I just wanted it to 'go away'. This was the way I made it get the hell outta my garage. No, I wouldn't recommend trying it.

You could probably make it work, but it'd take a good deal of fab work. You could fab a torque mount (like they do for the 9" rears), you could modify the axle tubes & cut/weld spring perches, the brake backing plates might bolt up to the tubes... But it sounds like too much hassle to me.

The '71 fbodies had a narrower width than the 4th gens do. They changed that when they started using the front-wheel drive wheel offset, requiring a wider axle. I think there is a company that makes wheel spacers that would allow it to work with the new wheels, or you could use wheels with the old offset on the back (made to fit a 2nd gen.) Changing over the spring mounts is pretty easy; you just cut the old ones off and weld on the new ones. You could get a torque arm mount from Moser and weld that on. Then you would have to use the rear drum brakes, or fab an adapter for your disks. I think it would be worth while if you are getting the 12 bolt for free and it's already set up with the gears and posi that you want, and you enjoy fabing, i.e. do your own welding. Otherwise just buy one from Moser ready to drop in.

I think the total bill was about $2700 with everything. The aluminum center section jacked the price up another $150 or so. I did all the installation stuff myself.
