Default Pontiac bah-bye?

General Motors is expected to announce details of its “faster, deeper” reorganization plans early next week. According to an unnamed company source, those plans might include a death sentence for the historic Pontiac brand, which has been hanging on for dear life since GM’s initial assertion that the brand would move to a small niche element of the automaker’s portfolio.

GM has been talking about hacking off Pontiac and Saturn for a while, Hummer and Saab are both packaged for individual brand sale as well.

Simple truth is that GM could have the cure for cancer and no one would know about it and they wouldn't know where to sell it. Years ago they started mixing and blurring the lines of their own brands in some misguided attempt to be a total niche company and now they are continuing it by bombing recognizable brands instead of playing from their strengths and the last shreads of brand image that they have left.

Outside of the GM community most people are hard pressed to name a non-Chevy or any vehicle that Howie Long hasn't talked about.

It would be cool if someone could at least buy Pontiac to keep it around. Probably could only build specialty vehicles though.

Maybe if we get everyone on 'Tech to put up some money we could get it from GM

Factory parts. Aftermarket and used parts sellers might try to raise prices but it won't work. OEM, dealer only stuff will triple in cost minutes before any official announcement.
Get all the F-body, GTO, Grand Prix and Grand Am sheetmetal, plastic body and any performance parts you can!
Shoot for the 1 or 2 year only stuff - that crap always turns to gold when discontinued.
Dealerships WILL be selling out inventory - great time to have money

So I may need to make my move on a G8 GXP sooner than later...

I am also saddened that the Trans Am will never return

I don't think our cars will see an increase in value for years. Asking prices may go up - but the sale price won't.
People that want them are right here - we aren't paying more, LS1's are getting cheap! And it's already been out of production since '02.
What guy with pockets lined of money will suddenly think an F-body is worth more than yesterday as an "investment"?
Factor in current economy and I think just the dealerships will suffer, raise prices on parts and "rare" brand new cars.
it will be awhile before we see a resale increase based on Pontiac being extinct.

And launching a new Camaro SS

without a brother Trans Am is retarded.

sadly, I do not think this will increase the value of our cars one bit... maybe in 30 years, if the plastics have not rotted away by then... but not any time in the near future...

http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/27/news...ment/index.htm

here is a CNN article, again it is sad but this needed to be done 15 yrs ago. Unfortunately the book of biz that GM had and over saturation of dealerships in the market marred by poor quality lead to this decision.

GM will be back on it's feet, but that will take time.

As for having the last Year Firebird, if I left it stock and put it away, then it would be worth something or at least once cars hit their 20-30 yr cycle, then you might see an increase in value.

http://money.cnn.com/2009/04/27/auto...ion=2009042711

here is another Article on WHY!

Pontiac's problem was not sales, GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson indicated during a conference call Monday. In 2008, Pontiac was the company's third-best selling brand behind Chevrolet and GMC and sold twice as many vehicles as Buick, a brand that will apparently survive the changes at GM.

The problem for Pontiac has been profitability. GM doesn't generally break out profits by brand, but Buick and GMC, which are sold in dealerships alongside Pontiacs, are more profitable, Henderson said.

"We didn't have a strategy that we were satisfied with that would allow us to win with the Pontiac brand," he said.
