Drag runs = 1st and 3rd grinding...works fine now...why?

Drag runs = 1st and 3rd grinding...works fine now...why? So I made 3 drag runs at the track. Everything when smooth the first 2 runs. Third run would have been my best until I went for 3rd gear. It did the infamous problem of not working.
Sometimes I could wait a sec and it would go in, but all it did was grind this time. I coasted the rest of the way. I tried 1st on the return road and it was grinding too. 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th worked fine.
After jacking around with it, I could get it into 1st and 3rd. It would pop out a few times though. I parked it to cool down and drove it home with zero problems. What the hell happened?
