Default excess shifter rail movement

Is it normal to be able to move the shifter forward and backward about 1/4" in all gears? I replaced the shifter hat, the plastic cup in the rail a while back and that did nothing.

Are you using a stock shifter? What is the "shifter hat" that you replaced?

I'm using the stock Hurst but I have a Pro5.0 and the same issue. When I had the shifter out I could move the shifter rail by hand forward and backward. As far a the shifter hat it's the plastic cup shown her http://www.ls1howto.com/howto/fbody/.../pro50_009.jpg. Is there some kind of adjustment or this just something that is wornout? Its makes for sloppy shifting.

And it does that when engaged in gear, in all the gears? That is odd.. Once engaged, the slider shouldn't move because of the synchro keys, and the fork pads should keep the forks tight in the slider. The forks are held to the shifter rail by shift links, and the interlock. There's really no place for play in all the gears to creep in there.

I guess all of your fork pads could be worn???

That is really strange.

Hmm... Shift links and the interlock ???

That's the focal point to everything.

In all the gears when engaged but 1 thru 5 are the worse. Other than that the shifts are fine. A little notchy at times but no grinding or popping out of gear.
