Long story short I was racing and missed 3rd. Now when I try to shift into 5th nine times out of ten the shifter shakes and grinds and won't go into gear. Don't know anything about trannys, but want to know what I messed up and how much.

Sounds like when you missed 3rd, you went into the 5th gear slot and chewed up the 5th gear synchro/slider/teeth...

$100->$400 of parts depending on what actually happened + labor if you don't DIY.

if he just chnaged gears properly but put it in 5th by mistake instead of 3rd, that shouldnt damage anything.
