Stalls Speeds and Horsepower
Currently I run an LS1 with a yank 4000 stall. I've been reading and searching this forum for advice on how to pick a stall, but every situation is different.
When I used nitrous, the rpms stayed pretty much at that 5800 rpm number. That was with a 100shot.
I now have a 408 going in, ~650HP at the crank, cam is:
249/257 650/650 lift on a 114
I'm thinking of getting a tighter and lower stall, thinking 3200-3600 or should I go even lower? From what I have been told and have read the lower and tighter the stall, the more power you actually get to the wheels.

figured I'd bump this up now that I found out my stall is actually a 4000 Fuddle with a 2.5STR
The for sale ad when I bought the car said "Yank 4000". Wasn't till I got in contact with the original Buffalo area owner that I found out it wasn't a yank....so that phone call I had with a yank rep some time ago is moot point for tightening up a yank 4000.
I'll probably be calling around in a month or so when I have my tax return looking into new converters, will probably try this one to see just how loose it will be.

Your 408 and ours is very similiar. I went through a few different stall converters before getting the right match for our 408. We run all motor, but our Circle D 5C and 230mm would have taken a 100 shot with no problem. We pulled 1.29 60fts with it and ran 9.96s.
We now have a powerglide behind the 408 and a Circle D 230mm 5000 stall and it pushed us to a new personal best Friday night with 9.91s at 136mph.
Give Chris at Circle D Specialties a call at 713-895-8834. He's very familiar with our combo and has been building converters for various High HP cars for a long time. He'll do you right.

i use a yank 8" race converter behind my 408
mine is roughly 630-640 at the crank.
power at the wheels is the last thing you want to worry about.
if you are spraying, you may want a tight converter, but it can suffer on motor.
my converter will footbrake 4800. im guessing it flashes in the 5800-6000 range. the stock tach cant keep up.
